Laos-China Railway (LCR)
Laos-China Railway (LCR) runs the modern standard gauge line from Vientiane through Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang to Boten on the Chinese border, where it continues to Mohan, Pu'er and Kunming. Trains are fast, clean and air-conditioned, and they leave exactly on time. Tickets open only a few days ahead: 6 days for trains within Laos and 14 days for routes to China, from 06:30 Laos time. The official LCR app requires a Lao phone number; with YesMyTrips you book with an email address and an international card.
Train classes
The classes on sale depend on the train: international D trains have First and Second Class, domestic Lane Xang C trains add Business Class, and the slow K trains have Hard Seat only. Seats are assigned automatically when the ticket is issued.
Wide leather seats, extra legroom and the fewest passengers. C trains only.
2+2 seating, more legroom and a quieter carriage. D and C trains.
2+3 seating with A/C, the standard choice. D and C trains.
Fixed upright seats on the slow K trains that stop at every station.

Yes. Each passenger can bring 20kg of luggage. Security at LCR stations is airport-style, so knives, scissors, aerosols, flammable liquids, vapes and lighters are not allowed.
Your passport is required to buy the ticket and to enter the station, and the name on the ticket must match it exactly. Arrive at least 60 minutes before departure for the security check. For routes to China, you also need a valid entry permission for China.
