The Hai Van Pass: the most beautiful hour on Vietnam’s railway

For the final stretch before Da Nang, the track leaves the highway behind and clings to the coastline around the Hai Van headland, threading between jungle hillside and the open water of the East Sea. The road above it is famous in its own right; the railway, running lower and closer to the sea, arguably has the better view. You pass the Lang Co lagoon, a run of short tunnels and a string of fishing bays before the train pulls into Da Nang station. The catch is timing. This scenery sits on the Hue to Da Nang leg, so you only see it if your service covers that stretch in daylight. The evening departures (SE3, SE19 and SE1) reach the coast through mid to late morning and arrive in full daylight; the morning and early afternoon departures pass the same coast in darkness. How long does the Hanoi to Da Nang train take?

Plan for between 15 and 18 hours, depending on the service. The fastest train on the route is the SE3 at about 15h08m; the slower SE11 and SE17 run just over 18 hours. Most travellers take one of the overnight services, boarding in the evening in Hanoi and waking up near the central coast, which turns the travel duration into a night of sleep and saves the cost of a hotel. First class, sleeper cabins and luxury carriages

Vietnam Railways does not use the term first class the way European railways do. The classes run from a hard seat, up through a soft seat, a six-berth hard sleeper, and at the top the four-berth soft sleeper, which is the closest thing to a first-class cabin on this route and what most international travellers book. It is a lockable, air-conditioned cabin with four soft berths, power outlets and bedding provided. On a handful of departures, private operators add deluxe carriages with two-berth cabins and upgraded amenities, the genuine luxury-train option, at a higher fare. Whichever class you pick, your seat reservation and exact berth are confirmed when you book, not assigned at the station.

Power, Wi-Fi and comfort

Air-conditioned carriages have 220V sockets for charging phones and laptops, shared between seats or fitted inside sleeper cabins. Bring a universal adapter, as some sockets take the local two-pin plug. Onboard Wi-Fi is patchy and drops out on rural and mountain stretches, so download anything you want to watch or listen to before you board. The air-conditioning runs cold overnight; a light layer or a scarf makes the difference on the long-distance services.

Food and drink

A trolley service passes through the carriages with hot drinks, instant noodles, soft drinks and snacks, and most long-distance trains also have a small dining car. Prices are low but the choice is limited, so it pays to bring your own. Grab fresh fruit, a sandwich or local street food from the station or a nearby shop before departure. It's cheaper, better, and turns a plain trolley meal into a proper picnic with a view.

Luggage

There's no separate check-in for luggage; you keep your bags with you. Overhead racks above the seats take a backpack or a cabin-sized case, and larger suitcases go in the open storage areas at the ends of each carriage or under the lower berths in sleeper cabins. Vietnam Railways sets a 20kg guideline per passenger, rarely enforced strictly, but keep valuables, documents and electronics in a small bag you hold onto for the journey.

When tickets go on sale

Vietnam Railways releases seats up to 44 days before the departure date. If your travel date is further out, trains will display with a "Not open yet" status, this is normal and means tickets are not yet available. When the window opens, all seats become available at once. Popular services, especially 4-berth soft sleepers and lower berths, sell out quickly during Tet, summer, and public holidays, so securing your spot early is essential.
