Train operators in Vietnam

Every train you can book in Vietnam runs on one shared network operated by the state-owned company Vietnam Railways (VR). Comfort varies from coach to coach, so two passengers on the same train can have very different journeys depending on the class they choose.

Vietnam Railways

VR runs its own coaches on every train. Seat coaches come as Seat and Soft Seat, and sleeper cabins as 6-berth, 4-berth and, on select trains, a 2-berth VIP cabin. Staff on board look after the coaches much like flight attendants on a domestic flight.

Train services and codes

Each train has a code. The letters show the type of service and the number is the individual train. The SE (Super Express) trains are the main long distance services on the Reunification line between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Getting around Vietnam by train

Vietnam has about 2,600 kilometres of railway. The backbone is the Reunification line between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, with regional lines from Hanoi to Lao Cai and to Hai Phong, and from Ho Chi Minh City to Phan Thiet. Most lines use metre gauge track.

Choose your class, seats and passenger details

Open a train to see its classes and prices, from Seat and Soft Seat to 6-berth and 4-berth cabins. On the passenger page, enter names exactly as on the passport and pick your seats or berths on the coach chart, where available places are blue, booked places are red and yours are green.

Vietnam Railways releases tickets 44 days before departure on every route. Use the booking window checker to see whether your date is open and to get a free email alert when it opens. As of today, Vietnam Railways has already opened every departure through 3 January 2027, so earlier dates can be booked now.

How to use your e-ticket

Your e-ticket is the official Vietnam Railways ticket. Keep it ready on your phone, or print a copy in case you have no signal or battery when boarding.

Receive your e-ticket by email

Once your booking shows as Confirmed, your e-tickets arrive by email as an attachment. Save them to your phone or print a copy.

Arrive at the station on time

Get to the station at least 30 minutes before departure so you can find your platform. Stations are busier around Tet and the summer holidays.

Board the train

Show your e-ticket and your original passport when asked. Vietnam Railways checks passenger identity closely, especially on the Reunification Express. Then find your coach and your seat or berth.

Changes and cancellations

Vietnam Railways tickets follow strict change and cancellation rules. Check them before you pay, especially if your plans might move.
