Crossing the Hai Van Pass.

The stretch between Hue and Da Nang is the most scenic rail segment in Vietnam, and your Ninh Binh to Da Nang train runs straight through it.

What you see from the window

For about 21 kilometres the line clings to the coast between Da Nang and Lang Co, climbing the Hai Van ('Ocean Cloud') Pass. The train runs slower here than the road and, unlike the highway buses that dive straight through the Hai Van Tunnel, it hugs the cliff edge above the water. The highlights come fast: the sweep of Da Nang Bay, the curved white sand of Lang Co Bay, the mirror-flat Lap An Lagoon with its oyster rafts, and a run of short tunnels where the sea drops away just metres from the carriage.

Which side to sit

Travelling Hue to Da Nang, book a window seat on the left side for uninterrupted sea views. The opposite side faces the mountain wall.

Timing your ride

On this longer route the pass is only one leg, and not every service crosses it in daylight. Check your train's timing over the Hue–Da Nang section before booking if the scenery is the priority, or take the short Da Nang–Hue hop separately in daytime.

Onboard

What it's like on the train.

Vietnam Railways has steadily refreshed its carriages, and the air-conditioned classes are comfortable, practical, and better equipped than most first-time travellers expect.

Power, Wi-Fi and comfort

Air-conditioned carriages have 220V sockets for charging phones and laptops, shared between seats or fitted inside sleeper cabins. Bring a universal adapter, as some sockets take the local two-pin plug. Onboard Wi-Fi is patchy and drops out on rural and mountain stretches, so download anything you want to watch or listen to before you board. The air-conditioning runs cold overnight; a light layer or a scarf makes the difference on the long-distance services.

Food and drink

A trolley service passes through the carriages with hot drinks, instant noodles, soft drinks and snacks, and most long-distance trains also have a small dining car. Prices are low but the choice is limited, so it pays to bring your own. Grab fresh fruit, a sandwich or local street food from the station or a nearby shop before departure. It's cheaper, better, and turns a plain trolley meal into a proper picnic with a view.

Luggage

There is no luggage check-in: you keep your bags with you. Each passenger can bring up to 20kg of luggage. Keep valuables, documents and electronics in a small bag you hold onto for the journey.

Booking window

How far ahead can you book?

You can book this route up to 44 days before departure. Here is how the Vietnam Railways sales window works, and how to secure your preferred seats the moment they open.

When tickets go on sale

Vietnam Railways releases seats up to 44 days before the departure date. If your travel date is further out, trains will display with a "Not open yet" status, this is normal and means tickets are not yet available. When the window opens, all seats become available at once. Popular services, especially 4-berth soft sleepers and lower berths, sell out quickly during Tet, summer, and public holidays, so securing your spot early is essential.

★

Exceptional update: reservations are open on every Vietnam Railways route through February 25, 2027, well beyond the usual 44 day booking window.

About the author

Maxence Decamp, founder of YesMyTrips, on a boat in Southeast Asia.

Maxence Decamp

French, based in Southeast Asia since 2017, now living in Vietnam

I spent six years in transport booking across Southeast Asia before founding YesMyTrips in 2025. In those years I saw too many travellers arrive at the wrong station in Hanoi or Saigon, miss their train, or pay two or three times the real fare because of contradictory information found online. The platform exists to make booking simple and reliable, with inventory connected live to the official Vietnam Railways system.

This editorial site exists for a different reason. Most English language guides to Vietnamese trains are generic, copied from one blog to the next, and often wrong. Here I publish data checked against the official Vietnam Railways system, and I write the guides from riding the routes myself, not from a search engine.

This blog combines YesMyTrips' regularly verified data and my own travel notes, route by route.
