Fares change with the travel period: holidays such as Tet cost more. They do not go down when you book early.

Who sleeps where

Every berth has its own number on the seat map, so you decide who sleeps where before you pay. A few things help the night go well.

Lower berths

More space and easy to get in and out of. During the day they are where everyone sits together. Give them to grandparents, and to the parent sleeping next to a toddler.

Upper berths

Older children usually love them. They are high and need a climb, so they are not for small children or anyone unsteady on their feet. They can be colder, closer to the air conditioning, so pack an extra layer.

In a 6-berth cabin

Berths are on three levels: lower, middle and upper. The middle and top berths have little headroom and are tight for adults, so they suit older children best.

A night on the train with kids

Before you board

Arrive at the station 30 to 45 minutes before departure: with children and bags you need time to find the platform and your carriage. Pack a small night bag with pyjamas, toothbrushes, a warm layer, wet wipes, snacks and water, so the big suitcases can stay stored for the whole trip.

Your e-ticket shows the departure station. In Hanoi, trains going south leave from Hanoi Station on Le Duan street, and trains to Lao Cai leave from the back entrance of the same station on Tran Quy Cap street, so check the side before you take a taxi.

On board

Lock the door from inside when you go to sleep. Big bags go under the lower berths or in the luggage space of the cabin. A trolley with drinks, instant noodles and hot meals passes along the corridor several times, and each sleeper carriage has a hot water point, handy for noodles or a baby bottle, and toilets with washbasins at the ends of the carriage.

Arriving

Many night trains arrive very early: the table above shows the arrival times for each route. The main stations in Hanoi, Hue, Da Nang, Nha Trang and Saigon are a short taxi or ride-hailing trip from most hotels. From Lao Cai, Sapa is about an hour away by road. If you arrive before dawn, ask your hotel for an early check-in or a place to leave your bags.

Is it safe for families?

Once every berth is yours, only your family is in the cabin, and the door locks from inside. Each sleeper carriage has an attendant who checks tickets and can help during the night. Keep passports, phones and money with you on your berth, and keep your luggage inside the cabin rather than in the corridor.

Holiday cabins go first

Christmas, New Year and Tet: whole 4-berth cabins on night trains sell out first. Booking early does not make the fare cheaper, it gives you a better chance of finding a free cabin on the train you want.

Questions families ask

Are all berths really in the same cabin?

Yes, when you pick them in one compartment. The seat map groups the berths by compartment: choose the 4 berths of one compartment, or all 6 in a 6-berth cabin. Your e-tickets show the carriage and berth numbers, so you can check before you travel.

Can a stranger be put in an empty berth?

Not when you have booked every berth of the compartment. If you book fewer berths than the compartment has, Vietnam Railways can sell the free berths to other passengers.

Is the price per person or for the whole cabin?

The example price on this page is for a whole cabin, all 4 berths together, and the price per person is that total divided by 4. In the search results each berth has its own price, and lower berths cost a little more than upper berths.

Travelling with grandparents: can we get lower berths?

Yes. Every 4-berth cabin has 2 lower berths, and you choose each berth on the seat map. Give the lower berths to the grandparents: the upper berths sit high and are harder to climb. See who sleeps where.

We are 6 or 8. What are our options?

A 6-berth cabin for 6, two 4-berth cabins in the same carriage for 8: see which cabin for your family size.

We are a bigger group. Can you help?

Yes. For 7 people, or 9 and more, send us your route, date and group size on WhatsApp, Zalo, Telegram or by email, and we look for cabins that keep your group together. Contact us.

Can we choose lower or upper berths?

How much luggage can we bring?

The official allowance is 20 kg per passenger. It is applied flexibly, but keep your bags easy to carry and to store inside the cabin.

Is there food on board? Toilets?

A trolley with drinks, instant noodles and hot meals passes along the corridor several times, and you can bring your own food. Each sleeper carriage has toilets and washbasins at the ends, and a hot water point for tea or noodles.

My travel date is not open yet. What can I do?

Vietnam Railways usually opens sales about 44 days before departure, and sometimes releases holiday dates earlier. Leave your email on our booking window page and we tell you when your dates open.

Can I change or cancel?

You can cancel up to 4 days before departure, except during festival and holiday periods. The fee is 50% of the ticket fare plus 50,000 VND per ticket. The YesMyTrips service or payment fee is not refundable. Changes are not possible.

Is it better to take the night train or fly with kids?

The night train saves a hotel night and the time spent getting to and waiting at the airport, and children can move around and sleep lying down. It is slower than flying, and light sleepers may sleep less because of the motion and the stops. Some routes, such as Hanoi - Lao Cai for Sapa, have no flight at all.
