The Bangkok to Surat Thani train, up close.
Surat Thani is the main rail gateway to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Khao Sok, about 640 km south of Bangkok. Almost every train is an overnight service, which turns the longest part of the trip to the islands into a night's sleep.
The station is not in Surat Thani
Surat Thani station is in Phun Phin, about 15 km west of the city. Buses and minivans link it with Don Sak pier for the Samui and Phangan ferries, so many travellers never see Surat Thani town at all. If the islands are your goal, look for a combined bus and ferry ticket from the station.
How long does the Bangkok to Surat Thani train take?
The fastest train, the Special Express 43, takes 8h50m, and the slowest takes 10h46m. There are 11 trains a day: the first leaves Bangkok at 07:30 and the last at 22:50. 10 of them run overnight.
Arriving in the small hours
Some southbound trains reach Phun Phin long before the first boats. Small hotels face the station if you want a few hours of proper sleep before continuing.

How far ahead can you book?
You can book this route up to 90 days before departure. Here is how the sales window works, and how to find out the moment your date opens.
When tickets go on sale
