The journey

The Bangkok to Hua Hin train, up close.

Hua Hin is one of Thailand's oldest beach resorts and grew up around the railway, when the court came down the line to spend the hot season by the sea. It is the shortest of the popular trips south from Bangkok, easy by day or in the evening.

The royal station

You arrive next to one of the most photographed stations in the country: Hua Hin's old wooden station with its red and white Royal Waiting Room. A new station opened right beside it in 2023 as part of the double track project, and the old building is preserved as a monument you can walk around and photograph.

How long does the Bangkok to Hua Hin train take?

The fastest train, the Special Express 43, takes 3h01m, and the slowest takes 3h55m. There are 11 trains a day: the first leaves Bangkok at 07:30 and the last at 22:50. 3 of them run overnight.

Krung Thep Aphiwat, not Hua Lamphong

Long distance trains to the south leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal in Chatuchak, not from the old Hua Lamphong station in central Bangkok. The terminal is huge and has its own MRT Blue Line stop, Bang Sue, so give yourself time to find the long distance platforms.

Onboard

What it's like on the train.

SRT trains range from fan-cooled third class seats to air-conditioned sleeper cars on the night trains.

Power and comfort

Newer air-conditioned trains have power sockets, older fan and third class cars usually do not, so charge your devices before boarding. Air-conditioned cars can run cold at night, bring a light layer.

Food and drink

Long distance trains usually have a dining car or staff selling meals and drinks at your seat. On shorter trips, buy food at the station before departure.

Luggage

There is no luggage check-in: you keep your bags with you. Each passenger can bring up to 30kg of luggage in third class, 40kg in second class and 60kg in first class.

Good to know

The practical details.

Onboard

Air-conditioned classes are cool, fan classes have open windows. Lower berths are wider and cost a little more than upper berths.

ID & tickets

Bring the passport used at booking, the name must match your ticket. The e-ticket on your phone is enough, no printout needed.

Changes & refunds

Changes and cancellations follow SRT rules and fees. Check the conditions shown with each fare before you pay.

Best time to travel

Book ahead for Songkran in April, New Year and long weekends, when sleeper berths sell out first.

Before you go, read our guides to booking SRT tickets, changes and cancellations, food on board and the ladies only carriage.

Booking window

How far ahead can you book?

You can book this route up to 90 days before departure. Here is how the sales window works, and how to find out the moment your date opens.

When tickets go on sale

The State Railway of Thailand releases seats 90 days before the departure date. If your travel date is further out, trains show a "Not open yet" status: this is normal and means tickets are not on sale yet. Sleeper berths around holidays sell out quickly once the window opens. Every rule of the SRT sales window, holidays included, is in our SRT booking window guide.

About the author

Maxence Decamp, founder of YesMyTrips, on a boat in Southeast Asia.

Maxence Decamp

French, based in Southeast Asia since 2017

I spent six years in transport booking across Southeast Asia before founding YesMyTrips in 2025. In those years I saw too many travellers arrive at the wrong station, miss their train, or pay two or three times the real fare because of contradictory information found online. The platform exists to make booking simple and reliable.

This editorial site exists for a different reason. Most English language guides to trains in the region are generic, copied from one blog to the next, and often wrong. Here I publish data checked against the official operator systems, and I write the guides from riding the routes myself, not from a search engine.

This blog combines YesMyTrips' regularly verified data and my own travel notes, route by route.
