The cabins

Two cabins, one space.

One of the best-kept secrets of Thai rail: every first class car, classic or CNR, is made of two-berth cabins, one lower and one upper berth, and these cabins come in connecting pairs. A partition that unlocks from both sides joins the two spaces.

Book both cabins of a pair and you get a real family suite: four berths, your own door, nobody else.

The layout

How the pairs work.

Solid outline: lower berths, wider, with the window. Dashed outline: upper berths. The partition between the two cabins of a pair unlocks from both sides.

A CNR first class car has 12 cabins, so 6 connecting pairs. The partitions join the cabins two by two: the cabin with berths 1 and 2 connects with the cabin with berths 3 and 4, the cabin with berths 5 and 6 with the one with 7 and 8, and so on. Always two consecutive cabins.

The partition must be unlocked from both sides to open. One cabin alone cannot open it: both groups of passengers have to agree.

Step by step

How to book a connecting pair.

  1. Search your route and pick first classEnter your route (for example Bangkok - Chiang Mai), choose a train and click "Book" next to first class sleeper (AC).
  2. Find a free connecting pairOn the seat map, look for two neighbouring cabins of the same pair with all four berths free.
  3. Select your cabinsFour of you: select the four berths of the pair. Three of you: select both berths of one cabin and tick "Book the whole cabin" on the other, so no stranger gets the free berth.
  4. Complete and payEnter each passenger and pay. The official SRT e-tickets arrive by email, one per passenger.
  5. On board: unlock the partitionThe partition is usually closed at departure. Since both cabins are yours, unlock it from both sides and open it. The train staff can help if needed.

Book early

You need two neighbouring cabins with all four berths free at the same time, the hardest combination to find late. Book in the first days after sales open, 90 days ahead at 08:30 Bangkok time, even in low season.

Before you book

Quick answers.

How do I spot connecting cabins on the seat map?

They are always two consecutive cabins: berths 1-2 with 3-4, 5-6 with 7-8, and so on up to 21-22 / 23-24. On the YesMyTrips seat map, they sit side by side: look for two neighbouring cabins of the same pair with all four berths free.

When should I book the whole cabin, and when is it useless?

If you are four and book the four berths of the pair, you already fill every bed: no stranger can come in and the partition opens freely. The cabin fare only helps when you are three: you book both berths of one cabin, and the whole cabin next door for the third person. Otherwise the free berth of that cabin could be sold to a stranger.

Do all first class cars have connecting cabins?

Yes. SRT first class is always made of closed two-berth cabins, on the new CNR cars and on the older ones, and the cabins always come in connecting pairs. That covers every train with first class: 8 trains from Bangkok, listed above.

Can I book three of the four berths and leave the fourth empty?

You can, but avoid it. The free berth can be sold to someone else, and then the pair loses its point: the partition only opens if both sides agree, and a stranger has no reason to let you open it. One of your group ends up behind a closed partition, next to a stranger. For three, book both berths of one cabin and the whole cabin next door instead.

Can children travel in CNR first class?

Yes. Children under 3 and under 100 cm travel free, without their own berth. Children up to 11 and under 150 cm pay a child fare. In a connecting pair, parents can take the wider lower berths and the children the upper ones, or the other way round depending on age, and keep an eye on everyone at night.

How early should I book connecting cabins?

First class sells first, and you need two neighbouring cabins with all four berths free at the same time: the fuller the train, the rarer the combination. Book in the first days after sales open, 90 days ahead at 08:30 Bangkok time, even in low season, and on opening day from November to February and at Songkran. See the booking window guide.

About the author

Maxence Decamp

French, based in Southeast Asia since 2017

I spent six years in transport booking across Southeast Asia before founding YesMyTrips in 2025. In those years I saw too many travellers arrive at the wrong station, miss their train, or pay two or three times the real fare because of contradictory information found online. The platform exists to make booking simple and reliable.

This editorial site exists for a different reason. Most English language guides to trains in the region are generic, copied from one blog to the next, and often wrong. Here I publish data checked against the official operator systems, and I write the guides from riding the routes myself, not from a search engine.

This blog combines YesMyTrips' regularly verified data and my own travel notes, route by route.
