A private first class cabin, just for you

Travelling alone in first class? SRT has an official cabin fare: the whole cabin, door locked, nobody else, for 2,756 THB (US$ 82.05) on train 9 Bangkok - Chiang Mai. That is 736 THB (US$ 21.91) less than buying two berths, and only YesMyTrips and SRT D-Ticket sell it.

The cabin

The first class cabin.

CNR first class and classic first class are made of closed cabins with two berths, one lower and one upper. The door locks from the inside. On the CNR cars, each cabin has a washbasin, a power socket, individual reading lights and storage.

By default, a cabin takes two passengers of the same booking, or two strangers of the same sex. SRT never puts two strangers of opposite sexes in the same cabin, a rule applied strictly.

Travelling alone, you have two options: share the cabin with another passenger of the same sex, or book the whole cabin at the official SRT cabin fare.

Not booking the whole cabin?

If you book one berth, the other one stays on sale and a passenger of the same sex can take it. Being alone without the cabin fare is possible, but unlikely on busy dates.

What the cabin costs over one berth

On train 9, the cabin fare is 899 THB (US$ 26.76) more than one lower berth (1,857 THB (US$ 55.28)). For a night alone in a locked cabin with a washbasin, it is a very good deal if peace and quiet come first.

For whom

Who is it for?

Solo travellers who want quiet

A whole night on Bangkok - Chiang Mai with the door locked, waking up when you want: the most comfortable option on the Thai network for one person.

Light sleepers

No stranger getting in or out of the upper berth at night, no alarm but yours.

Not for two travellers

Two of you fill the cabin anyway: book the lower and the upper berth at the normal fare. The cabin fare is for one passenger only.

Before you book

Quick answers.

How much does a private CNR first class cabin cost on Bangkok - Chiang Mai?

On train 9 Bangkok - Chiang Mai, the cabin fare (whole cabin, one passenger) is 2,756 THB (US$ 82.05). That is 736 THB (US$ 21.91) less than buying two separate berths (3,492 THB (US$ 103.96)), which is what you would have to do on other platforms.

Why do other platforms not offer the cabin fare?

The cabin fare is an official SRT fare that needs a direct connection to the SRT booking system and its whole-cabin selection. It is harder to build than selling single berths, and many third-party platforms have not done it. A solo traveller who wants the cabin there has to buy two tickets at full fare. YesMyTrips built the option because it matters to solo travellers.

If I do not book the whole cabin, will I have to share?

Not always. It depends on whether someone books the other berth of your cabin. If you take a lower berth alone, the upper one stays on sale and a passenger of the same sex can take it. Being alone without the cabin fare is possible but unlikely, especially at busy times. If you want to be sure, the cabin fare is the only reliable way.

Can two travellers use the cabin fare?

No. Two of you fill the cabin anyway, since it has two berths, but the cabin fare is for one passenger only. Book the lower and the upper berth of the same cabin at the normal fare.

Is the cabin fare available on every first class train?

Yes. SRT first class is always made of closed two-berth cabins, on the new CNR cars and on the older ones, so the cabin fare exists on every train with first class: 8 trains from Bangkok, listed above.

How early should I book a private cabin?

First class sells first, and you need a cabin with both berths still free: the fuller the train, the fewer there are. Book on opening day, 90 days ahead at 08:30 Bangkok time. See the booking window guide.

Sources & verification. Fares checked on the SRT D-Ticket system, October 20, 2026. The cabin fare is an official SRT fare, not a commercial promotion.

About the author

Maxence Decamp, founder of YesMyTrips, on a boat in Southeast Asia.

Maxence Decamp

French, based in Southeast Asia since 2017

I spent six years in transport booking across Southeast Asia before founding YesMyTrips in 2025. In those years I saw too many travellers arrive at the wrong station, miss their train, or pay two or three times the real fare because of contradictory information found online. The platform exists to make booking simple and reliable.

This editorial site exists for a different reason. Most English language guides to trains in the region are generic, copied from one blog to the next, and often wrong. Here I publish data checked against the official operator systems, and I write the guides from riding the routes myself, not from a search engine.

This blog combines YesMyTrips' regularly verified data and my own travel notes, route by route.
