* Travelling alone and want the cabin to yourself: the SRT whole cabin fare costs less than two separate berths.

Shorter trips on the same trains cost less: open the route for its own fares.

Solo in first class? Get the cabin to yourself at the right price.

Without booking the whole cabin, you share it with a stranger of the same gender: SRT does not mix passengers who are not travelling together. There is an official solo cabin fare that costs less than two adult tickets. Check that your booking site sells it before you pay for two berths.

Family or group of four? Connect two cabins.

Classic cabins also come in connecting pairs. Book two neighbouring cabins (an odd and the next even number) to get a four-berth space. The partition locks from both sides.

Picking the right berth.

Each cabin has one lower and one upper berth. On YesMyTrips every berth is labelled "upper" or "lower" and light blue means free. On the official SRT site, green means free. Odd numbers are usually upper berths and even numbers lower, with exceptions on some trains: trust the ladder icon, which only appears on upper berths. The SRT site sometimes draws upper berths at the bottom of the plan, so check twice.

Classic or CNR?

Classic carriages have no screens, USB ports are not guaranteed and there is no shower in the car. The washbasin and the air-conditioning are there. If comfort matters more than price, check CNR first class on your date first.

Booking window

When and how to book it.

SRT opens sales 90 days before departure, at 08:30 Bangkok time.

High season (November to February, Songkran in April)

Book on opening day, 90 days out, from 08:30. There are few cabins and they go fast on popular night trains.

Low season (May to October)

Book within the first two weeks after sales open. This class is less in demand than CNR, but avoid weekends and Thai public holidays.

Missed the opening?

Check again in the week before departure: cancellations and released stock do appear. Not guaranteed, but worth a daily look.

If it is sold out

Look at CNR first class first, more comfortable for a close fare. Otherwise second class sleeper is a good choice on the same train.

Quick answers.

How much is a classic first class sleeper berth?

From 1,280 THB (US$ 38.11) for an upper berth to 2,356 THB (US$ 70.14), depending on distance and berth. Bangkok - Chiang Mai: upper 1,408 THB (US$ 41.92), lower 1,632 THB (US$ 48.59), whole cabin for one 2,194 THB (US$ 65.32). Fares verified October 20, 2026, all fees included.

How far ahead can I book?

90 days before departure, from 08:30 Bangkok time. On shorter trips (under 60% of the line) the window can be shorter.

How is it different from CNR first class?

Both are private cabins for two with a lockable door and air-conditioning. CNR is SRT's newest rolling stock, with screens, USB ports and hot showers in the car. Classic is older and plainer, but gives the same privacy for a lower fare.

Can I book a whole cabin travelling alone?

Yes, there is an official solo cabin fare that costs less than two adult tickets. Without it, you share the cabin with a stranger of the same gender, as SRT does not mix passengers who are not travelling together.

Is there a washbasin in the cabin?

Yes, every cabin has its own washbasin with a mirror. Unlike CNR carriages, though, classic cars have no shower. Bring what you need to freshen up.

Lower or upper berth?

The lower berth is wider and turns into a bench by day. It sells first. The upper berth is narrower and reached by a ladder. Two people in one cabin get both.

Are meals included?

No. The dining car is open to you, but value is poor. Bring your own food or buy from vendors at stations, which is allowed (just skip the durian).

About the author

Maxence Decamp, founder of YesMyTrips, on a boat in Southeast Asia.

Maxence Decamp

French, based in Southeast Asia since 2017

I spent six years in transport booking across Southeast Asia before founding YesMyTrips in 2025. In those years I saw too many travellers arrive at the wrong station, miss their train, or pay two or three times the real fare because of contradictory information found online. The platform exists to make booking simple and reliable.

This editorial site exists for a different reason. Most English language guides to trains in the region are generic, copied from one blog to the next, and often wrong. Here I publish data checked against the official operator systems, and I write the guides from riding the routes myself, not from a search engine.

This blog combines YesMyTrips' regularly verified data and my own travel notes, route by route.
