Air-conditioning or fan?

Most second class sleeper cars are air-conditioned, and those are the ones this page lists. A few trains may still run fan cars, much less comfortable in the hot season (March to June). YesMyTrips shows AC or fan for every berth: check it before you pay.

Lower, upper, or a bay of four?

The lower berth is wider, has the window and turns into a bench by day: it always sells first. The upper berth is narrower, reached by a ladder, and fine for a fit adult travelling alone. As a group, book all four berths of one bay (two lower and two upper facing each other) for an almost private space.

Seat map

Picking the right berth.

The car has 40 berths, half lower and half upper. On YesMyTrips every berth is labelled "upper" or "lower" and light blue means free. On the official SRT site, green means free. Odd numbers are usually upper berths and even numbers lower, with exceptions on some trains: trust the ladder icon, which only appears on upper berths.

Classic or CNR?

Same open berth with a curtain, but CNR second class runs on the newest carriages, with USB sockets, for a slightly higher fare. Classic makes up for it with more trains and departure times.

Booking window

When and how to book it.

SRT opens sales 90 days before departure, at 08:30 Bangkok time.

High season (November to February, Songkran in April)

Book on opening day, 90 days out, from 08:30. Lower berths on popular trains go within days.

Low season (May to October)

Book within the first two weeks after sales open. Lower berths go first: book earlier if you want one.

Missed the opening?

Look at the other trains on the same date: many sell this class. Check again in the week before departure too, cancellations do appear.

If it is sold out

CNR second class is a more comfortable alternative on the same lines. Avoid weekends and Thai public holidays.

Quick answers.

How much is a classic second class sleeper berth?

From 666 THB (US$ 19.83) for an upper berth to 1,045 THB (US$ 31.11), depending on distance and berth. Bangkok - Chiang Mai: upper 797 THB (US$ 23.73), lower 872 THB (US$ 25.96). Fares verified October 20, 2026, all fees included.

How far ahead can I book?

90 days before departure, from 08:30 Bangkok time. On shorter trips (under 60% of the line) the window can be shorter.

How is it different from CNR second class?

Both are open berths with a curtain and bedding. CNR is SRT's newest rolling stock, with USB sockets. Classic is older and a little cheaper, but runs on many more trains.

Is every second class sleeper air-conditioned?

Almost. A few trains may still have fan cars, less comfortable in hot weather. Check the AC or fan mention before you confirm.

Lower or upper berth: which one?

The lower berth is wider, has the window and turns into a bench by day. It costs a little more and always sells first. The upper berth suits a fit adult travelling alone, but space is tighter and you climb a ladder.

Can a family travel in second class?

Yes. Berths are grouped by four facing each other. Book all four in one group and you get an almost private space. For full privacy, a first class private cabin is a better fit.

Are there showers or sockets?

No shower in classic cars, only toilets at the end of the car. Sockets at the berth are not guaranteed: charge your devices before you board or bring a power bank.

Are meals included?

No. The dining car is open to you, but value is average. Bring your own food or buy from vendors at stations, which is allowed (just skip the durian).

About the author

Maxence Decamp, founder of YesMyTrips, on a boat in Southeast Asia.

Maxence Decamp

French, based in Southeast Asia since 2017

I spent six years in transport booking across Southeast Asia before founding YesMyTrips in 2025. In those years I saw too many travellers arrive at the wrong station, miss their train, or pay two or three times the real fare because of contradictory information found online. The platform exists to make booking simple and reliable.

This editorial site exists for a different reason. Most English language guides to trains in the region are generic, copied from one blog to the next, and often wrong. Here I publish data checked against the official operator systems, and I write the guides from riding the routes myself, not from a search engine.

This blog combines YesMyTrips' regularly verified data and my own travel notes, route by route.
