The Bangkok to Padang Besar train, up close.
This is the international train to the Malaysian border: Special Express 45, with second class sleeper berths. It leaves Bangkok in the afternoon and reaches Padang Besar the next morning, where you change to Malaysian trains for Butterworth and Kuala Lumpur.
One station, two border posts
Padang Besar station is in Malaysia, about 200 m south of the border, and both the Thai and Malaysian immigration counters are inside it. You get off, clear exit and entry in the same building and board your next train. The counters only open around the Thai train times.
