The Bangkok to Nong Khai train, up close.
Nong Khai is the end of the Thai network on the Mekong, about 620 km from Bangkok, with Laos on the opposite bank. The train climbs onto the Khorat Plateau and runs north via Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen and Udon Thani, the three big cities of Isan.
The Mekong and the Friendship Bridge
Nong Khai station is only a few kilometres from the Thai Lao Friendship Bridge, the main crossing to Vientiane. If Laos is your real destination, a direct train continues across the bridge to Vientiane, with border checks on the way, so you do not need to change here.

Through the new tunnel
About two hours out of Bangkok, the train runs through the Pha Sadet Tunnel, 5.4 km long and the longest railway tunnel in Thailand since the new double track section opened in 2024. It replaced the old winding line through the Dong Phaya Yen mountains.

Power and comfort
Newer air-conditioned trains have power sockets, older fan and third class cars usually do not, so charge your devices before boarding. Air-conditioned cars can run cold at night, bring a light layer.
Food and drink
Long distance trains usually have a dining car or staff selling meals and drinks at your seat. On shorter trips, buy food at the station before departure.
