The Bangkok to Chumphon train, up close.
Chumphon is where the Southern Line meets the Gulf islands: it is the mainland gateway to Koh Tao. Most trains from Bangkok run in the evening and overnight, so you can be on the boat the next morning.
Train and boat to Koh Tao
The ferry piers are more than 10 km from Chumphon town, but the boat companies run buses or vans from the station to the pier, usually included in the ferry fare. The fast boats take about two hours to Koh Tao, the slower ones a little longer.
How long does the Bangkok to Chumphon train take?
The fastest train, the Special Express 43, takes 6h20m, and the slowest takes 7h55m. There are 11 trains a day: the first leaves Bangkok at 07:30 and the last at 22:50. 6 of them run overnight.
The station is in town
Unlike Surat Thani, Chumphon station is right in the town centre, with guesthouses a five to ten minute walk away. Useful if your train arrives after the last boat of the day.

What it's like on the train.
SRT trains range from fan-cooled third class seats to air-conditioned sleeper cars on the night trains.

Food and drink
Long distance trains usually have a dining car or staff selling meals and drinks at your seat. On shorter trips, buy food at the station before departure.
Luggage
There is no luggage check-in: you keep your bags with you. Each passenger can bring up to 30kg of luggage in third class, 40kg in second class and 60kg in first class.
