Air-conditioning or fan?

Second class seat cars are either air-conditioned or fan-cooled, and the table shows the fare of each. The difference in comfort is real, above all from March to June when it goes over 35 °C. YesMyTrips shows AC or fan for every seat: check it before you book.

Window or aisle?

By day, take the window for the scenery. On the Northern line the mountains start after Phitsanulok. On the Southern line the Gulf coast runs alongside the track between Hua Hin and Chumphon. For the views, pick a seat on the left heading to Chiang Mai and on the right heading to Bangkok.

Travelling overnight?

For more than eight to ten hours at night, a berth changes everything: a second class sleeper costs a little more and saves you a hotel night.

Booking window

When and how to book it.

SRT opens sales 90 days before departure, at 08:30 Bangkok time.

High season (November to February, Songkran in April)

Popular day trains fill up fast. On long trips, book on opening day, 90 days out, from 08:30.

Low season (May to October)

Less pressure than on the sleepers: one to two weeks before departure is usually enough. The countryside is green, but showers can spoil the view.

Missed the opening?

Look at the other day trains on the same date: several daily departures sell this class. If you are flexible on the time, there is often space left.

If it is sold out

On a short trip, a third class seat will do. For a night trip, a second class sleeper is a comfortable alternative.

Quick answers.

How much is a second class seat?

From 244 THB (US$ 7.23) to 672 THB (US$ 19.90) per seat, depending on distance and carriage. Bangkok - Chiang Mai: from 472 THB (US$ 13.98). Fares verified October 31, 2026, all fees included.

How far ahead can I book?

90 days before departure, from 08:30 Bangkok time. On shorter trips (under 60% of the line) the window can be shorter.

What is the difference between the AC seat and the fan seat?

The AC seat is in an air-conditioned car, comfortable even in the heat. The fan seat is in a car with ceiling fans and opening windows, for a slightly lower fare. You feel the difference most from March to June. Check the AC or fan mention before you confirm.

Is the Bangkok - Chiang Mai day train worth it?

Yes, if you like scenery. The daytime Special Express crosses the central plains in the morning and the northern mountains in the afternoon, all of which the night hides. You arrive in the evening rather than in the morning.

Are seats assigned?

Yes. The seat is in your name and assigned when you book. On YesMyTrips the car plan shows live, so you can choose window, aisle, and facing forward or not.

Are meals included?

No. The dining car is open to second class passengers. Station vendors are often better and cheaper, and bringing your own food is allowed.

Are there power sockets?

Not guaranteed at the seat, especially in fan cars. Charge your devices before you board or bring a power bank.

About the author

Maxence Decamp, founder of YesMyTrips, on a boat in Southeast Asia.

Maxence Decamp

French, based in Southeast Asia since 2017

I spent six years in transport booking across Southeast Asia before founding YesMyTrips in 2025. In those years I saw too many travellers arrive at the wrong station, miss their train, or pay two or three times the real fare because of contradictory information found online. The platform exists to make booking simple and reliable.

This editorial site exists for a different reason. Most English language guides to trains in the region are generic, copied from one blog to the next, and often wrong. Here I publish data checked against the official operator systems, and I write the guides from riding the routes myself, not from a search engine.

This blog combines YesMyTrips' regularly verified data and my own travel notes, route by route.
