The Nong Khai to Bangkok train, up close.
From Nong Khai, on the Mekong at the northern edge of Thailand, the train runs about 620 km south through Udon Thani, Khon Kaen and Nakhon Ratchasima, then leaves the Khorat Plateau for Bangkok.
Starting at the Mekong
Nong Khai station is only a few kilometres from the Thai Lao Friendship Bridge, which makes it the natural place to pick up a train after crossing from Vientiane by road. If you are starting in Vientiane, there is also a direct train to Bangkok that clears the border on the way, so you do not need to change at Nong Khai.
How long does the Nong Khai to Bangkok train take?
The fastest train, the Express 76, takes 8h50m, and the slowest takes 11h05m. There are 3 trains a day: the first leaves Nong Khai at 06:30 and the last at 20:15. 2 of them run overnight.
Through the new tunnel
Roughly two hours before Bangkok, the train runs through the Pha Sadet Tunnel, 5.4 km long and the longest railway tunnel in Thailand since the new double track section opened in 2024. It replaced the old winding line through the Dong Phaya Yen mountains.
