The journey

The Vientiane to Bangkok train, up close.

The direct sleeper from Vientiane, running since 19 July 2024, crosses the Mekong on the Thai Lao Friendship Bridge and reaches Bangkok the next morning. It is the only through train between the two capitals, so there is no change at the border.

Border checks on the way out

You clear Lao exit formalities at Vientiane's Khamsavath station before boarding, cross the Friendship Bridge, then stop at Nong Khai for Thai entry. Check the Thai entry rules for your passport before you travel, as you are arriving at a land border rather than an airport.

How long does the Vientiane to Bangkok train take?

Every train takes 12h55m. There is 1 train a day, the Rapid 134, leaving Vientiane at 18:25. It runs overnight.

Khamsavath is outside the centre

Vientiane's station is about 7 km from the city centre. Leave enough time for the taxi ride out and for the Lao exit formalities before boarding.

Booking window

How far ahead can you book?

You can book this route up to 90 days before departure. Here is how the sales window works, and how to find out the moment your date opens.

When tickets go on sale

The State Railway of Thailand releases seats 90 days before the departure date. If your travel date is further out, trains show a "Not open yet" status: this is normal and means tickets are not on sale yet. Sleeper berths around holidays sell out quickly once the window opens. Every rule of the SRT sales window, holidays included, is in our SRT booking window guide.

About the author

Maxence Decamp, founder of YesMyTrips, on a boat in Southeast Asia.

Maxence Decamp

French, based in Southeast Asia since 2017

I spent six years in transport booking across Southeast Asia before founding YesMyTrips in 2025. In those years I saw too many travellers arrive at the wrong station, miss their train, or pay two or three times the real fare because of contradictory information found online. The platform exists to make booking simple and reliable.

This editorial site exists for a different reason. Most English language guides to trains in the region are generic, copied from one blog to the next, and often wrong. Here I publish data checked against the official operator systems, and I write the guides from riding the routes myself, not from a search engine.

This blog combines YesMyTrips' regularly verified data and my own travel notes, route by route.
