The Da Nang to Hue train guide: Booking & scenery.

The train from Da Nang to Hue is the only way to see the Hai Van Pass without a motorbike. In about two and a half hours it climbs the cliffs with open sea on one side and jungle mountains on the other, a view the road tunnel skips completely. It runs in daylight, is remarkably inexpensive, and you book a real reserved seat on a Super Express or Heritage train with the Vietnam Railways service. Sit on the right and you get the ocean the whole way.

About forty minutes after leaving Da Nang the train starts to climb, curling around headlands where the sea opens up below. Near the top it threads a series of short tunnels; each time you come out, the view has changed. Over the pass the landscape softens into the lagoons and rice fields on the run down toward Hue. The scenic stretch lasts roughly thirty to forty-five minutes, which is where the route earns its reputation as one of the finest railway journeys in Southeast Asia.

The landmarks to watch for: Lang Co Bay, a crescent of white sand often listed among the world's most beautiful bays, and Lap An Lagoon, a mirror-flat brackish lagoon dotted with oyster rafts that reflects the sky at low light.

My take

Book the right-hand window seats the moment you check the schedule, they are the whole point of this trip and they go first. If you cannot get them, do not panic: the beauty of the train is that you can stand at the open corridor windows and get the view from either side. The middle third of the journey is the part that matters, so keep your phone charged and stop scrolling before Lang Co. Regular Reunification seats are all you need for the views; the Heritage train is nicer but you are paying for the carriage, not for a better pass.

The line runs north from Da Nang, climbs over the Hai Van Pass, drops past Lang Co Bay and Lap An Lagoon, then rolls through lagoon country into Hue. The scenic cliff section is the middle third, roughly forty minutes after departure.

There is no flight on this short hop, and the bus takes the Hai Van road tunnel, which means it misses the pass entirely. A private car over the old mountain road is scenic but costs far more and can crawl behind trucks. The train is the only option that is both cheap and scenic: around two and a half to three hours, highly affordable, and an unbroken coastal view from a seat you reserved in advance.

Vietnam Railways opens seats for sale about 44 days before departure. That is the earliest you can hold a confirmed seat on the Da Nang to Hue train. Tickets do not sell out instantly on this route outside major holidays, but the best seats, the right-hand window seats for the pass, do go first, so booking a week or two ahead is sensible once your date is open.

Scheduled times run from about 2h28 on the fastest Super Express to just under 4 hours on the slower services. For the views, the exact train barely matters: every service crosses the Hai Van Pass in daylight if it leaves during the day, and the scenic stretch is the same 30 to 45 minutes whichever one you take.

Vietnam Railways is reasonably punctual on this short leg, far more so than on the long overnight runs where delays build up over hundreds of kilometres. A Da Nang to Hue train is early in its journey or close to its origin, so it usually leaves and arrives near schedule. Still, build a little buffer if you have a connection in Hue, and do not plan a tight onward transfer off the train's exact arrival minute.

Two different trains cross this pass, and it is worth knowing which you are booking. The regular Reunification service (the everyday North–South Vietnam Railways train) is the cheaper, more frequent way across, with standard soft-seat and sleeper carriages. The Heritage train (tourist services HD1 to HD4, introduced in 2024) uses vintage-styled carriages, adds onboard extras and a short photo stop, and costs more. The view over the pass is the same from both. Choose the regular train for value, the Heritage train for the packaged experience.

It is a short ride, so you do not need much, but a few things make it better:

Da Nang Railway Station (Ga Đà Nẵng)

In the city centre at 791 Hai Phong Street, roughly a 10-minute Grab ride from the Han River bridges. Small and efficient; arrive about 30 minutes before departure. Note Da Nang is a terminus, so on some through-trains the carriage orientation flips here, worth checking your seat side against the actual train.

Hue Railway Station (Ga Huế)

At 2 Bui Thi Xuan Street on the south bank of the Perfume River, about a 5-minute taxi to the tourist district and 15 to the Imperial City. Metered taxis and Grab wait at the main exit.

The dry season, roughly February to August, gives the clearest skies over the pass, with the shoulder months the sweet spot for light and low crowds. From September to December, low cloud and mist can hide the view for the very stretch you came for. Booking in summer, as now, lands you in the best window.
