What you see from the window

For about 21 kilometres the line clings to the coast between Da Nang and Lang Co, climbing the Hai Van ('Ocean Cloud') Pass. The train runs slower here than the road and, unlike the highway buses that dive straight through the Hai Van Tunnel, it hugs the cliff edge above the water. The highlights come fast: the sweep of Da Nang Bay, the curved white sand of Lang Co Bay, the mirror-flat Lap An Lagoon with its oyster rafts, and a run of short tunnels where the sea drops away just metres from the carriage.

Which side to sit

Travelling Da Nang to Hue, book a window seat on the right side for uninterrupted sea views. The opposite side faces the mountain wall.

The heritage train (HD1–HD4)

Alongside the mainline SE services, Vietnam Railways runs a dedicated tourist train on this route, the 'Central Heritage Connection' (tàu di sản): HD1 and HD3 from Hue, HD2 and HD4 from Da Nang. These use refurbished vintage-style carriages with an observation and dining car and a short photo stop at Lang Co, built around the scenery rather than just getting you there. If the journey itself is the point, book one of these.

Timing your ride

Every direct Da Nang–Hue service crosses the pass in daylight, so any of them works for the views. Travel in clear weather if you can; morning light is best over the water, and the coastal stretch begins roughly 40 minutes to an hour out of Da Nang.

Power, Wi-Fi and comfort

Air-conditioned carriages have 220V sockets for charging phones and laptops, shared between seats or fitted inside sleeper cabins. Bring a universal adapter, as some sockets take the local two-pin plug. Onboard Wi-Fi is patchy and drops out on rural and mountain stretches, so download anything you want to watch or listen to before you board. The air-conditioning runs cold overnight; a light layer or a scarf makes the difference on the long-distance services.

Food and drink

A trolley service passes through the carriages with hot drinks, instant noodles, soft drinks and snacks, and most long-distance trains also have a small dining car. Prices are low but the choice is limited, so it pays to bring your own. Grab fresh fruit, a sandwich or local street food from the station or a nearby shop before departure. It's cheaper, better, and turns a plain trolley meal into a proper picnic with a view.

Luggage

There's no separate check-in for luggage; you keep your bags with you. Overhead racks above the seats take a backpack or a cabin-sized case, and larger suitcases go in the open storage areas at the ends of each carriage or under the lower berths in sleeper cabins. Vietnam Railways sets a 20kg guideline per passenger, rarely enforced strictly, but keep valuables, documents and electronics in a small bag you hold onto for the journey.

When tickets go on sale

Vietnam Railways releases seats up to 44 days before the departure date. If your travel date is further out, trains will display with a "Not open yet" status, this is normal and means tickets are not yet available. When the window opens, all seats become available at once. Popular services, especially 4-berth soft sleepers and lower berths, sell out quickly during Tet, summer, and public holidays, so securing your spot early is essential.
