Practical tips

Wear light clothes, it gets hot, above all from March to June. Bring enough water and something to eat: vendors walk the platforms at stations, make the most of them. On a long trip, a book or music helps the hours go by.

The local experience

Third class is how Thai people travel every day: families, students, monks, traders. It is noisy, sometimes chaotic, always lively. Some travellers pick it for exactly that reason.

The car has 76 seats. On YesMyTrips, light blue seats are free and red ones are taken. On the official SRT site, green seats are free and pink or blue ones are taken.

A long trip? Think twice

Under two hours, third class is cheap and authentic. On a long trip like Bangkok - Chiang Mai, hard benches, heat and noise wear you out. An air-conditioned second class seat changes the comfort completely, and for a night on board a second class sleeper is clearly the better choice.

Booking window

When and how to book it.

SRT opens sales 90 days before departure, at 08:30 Bangkok time.

Short trips

On trips under two hours (Bangkok - Ayutthaya for example), tickets are often bought on the day at the station counter.

Long trips

Book ahead to be sure of a seat. Sales open 90 days before departure, at 08:30 Bangkok time.

November to February

The best time: pleasant temperatures, windows open, a very enjoyable ride.

March to October

Intense heat until June, then showers from May to October that force the windows shut. Over several hours, weigh it against a second class seat.

Quick answers.

How much is a third class seat?

From 120 THB (US$ 3.55) to 419 THB (US$ 12.41) per seat, depending on distance and carriage. Bangkok - Chiang Mai: from 307 THB (US$ 9.09). Fares verified October 31, 2026, all fees included.

How far ahead can I book?

90 days before departure, from 08:30 Bangkok time. On shorter trips (under 60% of the line) the window can be shorter.

Is third class really uncomfortable?

It depends on the trip and the season. One or two hours in December with the windows open is pleasant. Ten hours in April at 38 °C is another story. A simple rule: third class is fine for up to three hours in cool weather, beyond that a second class seat is worth the difference.

Is there air-conditioning?

No. Third class has fans only, with windows that open. If you need air-conditioning, take an air-conditioned second class seat.

Can I board without a ticket?

On some ordinary trains, Thai passengers sometimes pay the conductor on board for short trips. As a foreign traveller, it is better to hold a ticket to avoid any misunderstanding.

Can I use the dining car?

Yes, on trains that have one. In practice, station vendors are better and cheaper: make the most of the stops, some last several minutes.

About the author

Maxence Decamp, founder of YesMyTrips, on a boat in Southeast Asia.

Maxence Decamp

French, based in Southeast Asia since 2017

I spent six years in transport booking across Southeast Asia before founding YesMyTrips in 2025. In those years I saw too many travellers arrive at the wrong station, miss their train, or pay two or three times the real fare because of contradictory information found online. The platform exists to make booking simple and reliable.

This editorial site exists for a different reason. Most English language guides to trains in the region are generic, copied from one blog to the next, and often wrong. Here I publish data checked against the official operator systems, and I write the guides from riding the routes myself, not from a search engine.

This blog combines YesMyTrips' regularly verified data and my own travel notes, route by route.
