The journey

The Phitsanulok to Bangkok train, up close.

After Sukhothai, many travellers head back to Bangkok by train from Phitsanulok, the nearest station, roughly halfway down the Northern Line. Every Chiang Mai to Bangkok train stops here, by day and by night.

Coming from Sukhothai

Sukhothai has no railway station, so the trip starts with a bus to Phitsanulok, about 60 km away and just over an hour on the road, with buses roughly every hour during the day. Most use the terminal in New Sukhothai, 12 km from the historical park, so allow for a local bus or songthaew from the ruins first.

How long does the Phitsanulok to Bangkok train take?

The fastest train, the Special Express 8, takes 4h14m, and the slowest takes 6h27m. There are 7 trains a day: the first leaves Phitsanulok at 00:01 and the last at 23:03. 2 of them run overnight.

Night trains call at night

The overnight trains pass Phitsanulok in the middle of the night in both directions. If you board or get off here on one of them, book a room you can check into on arrival, or pick a day train if you want to reach Sukhothai the same day.

Onboard

What it's like on the train.

SRT trains range from fan-cooled third class seats to air-conditioned sleeper cars on the night trains.

Power and comfort

Long distance trains usually have a dining car or staff selling meals and drinks at your seat. On shorter trips, buy food at the station before departure.

Luggage

There is no luggage check-in: you keep your bags with you. Each passenger can bring up to 30kg of luggage in third class, 40kg in second class and 60kg in first class.

Booking window

How far ahead can you book?

You can book this route up to 90 days before departure. Here is how the sales window works, and how to find out the moment your date opens.

When tickets go on sale

The State Railway of Thailand releases seats 90 days before the departure date. If your travel date is further out, trains show a "Not open yet" status: this is normal and means tickets are not on sale yet. Sleeper berths around holidays sell out quickly once the window opens. About the author

Maxence Decamp, founder of YesMyTrips, on a boat in Southeast Asia.

Maxence Decamp

French, based in Southeast Asia since 2017

I spent six years in transport booking across Southeast Asia before founding YesMyTrips in 2025. In those years I saw too many travellers arrive at the wrong station, miss their train, or pay two or three times the real fare because of contradictory information found online. The platform exists to make booking simple and reliable.

This editorial site exists for a different reason. Most English language guides to trains in the region are generic, copied from one blog to the next, and often wrong. Here I publish data checked against the official operator systems, and I write the guides from riding the routes myself, not from a search engine.

This blog combines YesMyTrips' regularly verified data and my own travel notes, route by route.
