* Travelling alone and want the cabin to yourself: the SRT whole cabin fare costs less than two separate berths.
Shorter trips on the same trains cost less: open the route for its own fares.
Solo in first class? Get the cabin to yourself at the right price.
Without booking the whole cabin, you may share it with a stranger, always of the same gender: SRT does not mix passengers who are not travelling together. Most booking sites make you pay two full adult tickets for the cabin. There is an official SRT solo cabin fare that costs less. Pick a platform that sells it.

Family or group of four? Connect two cabins.
Cabins come in pairs (1 and 2, 3 and 4...). Open the partition and you get a four-berth suite. If strangers are next door, the partition locks from both sides, so nobody can open it without you.
How to book connecting cabins →My honest verdict.
Skipping the flight for the night train was the best call I made for our trip to Chiang Mai. I rode CNR first class on train 9 with my wife.
The cabin is small, about 1.80 m by 1.40 m, but well thought out: a real washbasin with a mirror, sockets and USB ports, two screens tracking the journey and two fold-down tables. The car has toilets and hot showers.
By day you get two comfortable seats facing the window. Around 8 pm the attendant makes up the beds: crisp white sheets and a proper duvet. The weak point is noise. Sound insulation is basic, so bring earplugs.
Honestly, for most travellers the better value is CNR second class. First class is worth it in three cases: two of you (or four with connecting cabins), you sleep badly, or this is the trip of a lifetime.
Picking the right berth.
On YesMyTrips every berth is labelled "upper" or "lower" and light blue means free. On the official SRT site, green means free. Odd numbers are usually upper berths and even numbers lower, with exceptions on some trains: trust the ladder icon, which only appears on upper berths. The SRT site sometimes draws upper berths at the bottom of the plan, so check twice.

Sharing with a stranger
You can book a berth in a cabin someone else already holds, on one strict condition: you must be the same gender. SRT conductors enforce it.
When and how to book it.
SRT opens sales 90 days before departure, at 08:30 Bangkok time.
High season (November to February, Songkran in April)
Book on opening day, 90 days out, from 08:30. The 12 cabins on the busiest train can go within hours.
Low season (May to October)
Book in the first days after sales open, even in low season: this class sells out first all year round, and weekends go faster still.
Missed the opening?
Check again in the week before departure: cancellations and released stock do appear. Not guaranteed, but worth a daily look.
If it is sold out
Move the date before you change class. Avoid Friday and Sunday nights. Otherwise CNR second class runs on the same carriages.

Other ways to sleep on board.
CNR second class sleeper
The same new carriages as an open car of 40 berths with curtains. Air-conditioned, bedding included.
Classic first class sleeper
A private two-berth cabin on the older trains. Less modern, and cheaper than CNR.
Ladies-only carriage
A CNR second class car reserved for women, with open berths and curtains.
Quick answers.
How much is a CNR first class sleeper berth?
From 1,487 THB (US$ 44.27) for an upper berth to 2,918 THB (US$ 86.87), depending on distance and berth. Bangkok - Chiang Mai: upper 1,632 THB (US$ 48.59), lower 1,857 THB (US$ 55.28), whole cabin for one 2,756 THB (US$ 82.05). Fares verified October 20, 2026, all fees included.
How far ahead can I book?
90 days before departure, from 08:30 Bangkok time. On shorter trips (under 60% of the line) the window can be shorter.
How is it different from second class sleeper?
CNR first class is a private cabin for two with individual air-conditioning, a washbasin and a lockable door. CNR second class is an open 40-berth carriage with curtains. Same rolling stock, different layout.
Lower or upper berth?
The lower berth is wider, has the window and turns into a bench by day. It always sells first. The upper berth is narrower and reached by a ladder. Two people in one cabin get both.
Do the cabins connect?
Yes, in pairs: 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6, 7 and 8, 9 and 10, 11 and 12. The partition must be unlocked from both sides to open.
Is there a shower?
Not in the cabin, but there are free shared hot showers at the end of the car. Towels and soap are not provided.
Are meals included?
No. The dining car is open to you, but value is poor. Bring your own food or buy from vendors at stations, which is allowed (just skip the durian).
