The Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani train, up close.
The Ubon branch of the Northeastern Line runs about 575 km from Bangkok across the Khorat Plateau to the eastern edge of Isan. After Nakhon Ratchasima it heads east through Buriram, Surin and Si Sa Ket, rice country most visitors only see from a bus window.
Through Thailand's longest railway tunnel
Roughly two hours out of Bangkok, the train enters a double track section between Map Kabao and Muak Lek, opened in 2024 to bypass the old winding route through the Dong Phaya Yen mountains. It includes the Pha Sadet Tunnel, 5.4 km long and now the longest railway tunnel in Thailand. Once through, the line climbs onto the plateau.
