North of Luang Prabang, the Laos-China Railway runs through mountains and long tunnels to small stations that had no rail link before December 2021. Trains here are few, so it pays to know the timetable before you plan the day.

The slow train that stops everywhere
Small stations such as Boten are served mainly by the K11 and K12, conventional trains with fixed Hard Seats that stop at every station. They are the only way to reach several of these towns by rail. The faster D87, D83 also stop here, so compare them before you book.
Getting to and from the station
Every station on the line sits several kilometers outside town. Budget a tuk-tuk or minivan transfer at both ends, and arrange it in advance at the smaller stations, where few drivers wait for the train.

Trains on the Laos-China Railway are modern, clean and air-conditioned, and the rules at the station are stricter than most travelers expect.
Power and comfort
All trains on this route are air-conditioned. The D trains have power sockets at the seats. Don't count on a socket at your seat on the K train: bring a charged power bank. The line runs through many tunnels, so mobile signal drops often: download films, music and maps before you board.
Food and drink
The D trains have a dining car, and a trolley passes with snacks and drinks. The K train has no dining car, so bring your own food and water. Stations have a small cafe and a few kiosks, but choice is limited, so stock up in town.
Luggage and security
Each passenger can bring 20kg of luggage. There is no checked baggage: keep your bags with you on the overhead racks or in the space at the end of each car. Security is airport-style, so leave knives, scissors, aerosols, flammable liquids, vapes and lighters behind, and keep your bags easy to open for inspection.
