The journey

The Alor Setar to Kuala Lumpur train, up close.

Alor Setar, the capital of Kedah, has direct ETS trains to Kuala Lumpur, passing the turnoff for Penang, then Taiping and Ipoh on the way south.

Out of rice country

The first part of the ride crosses the paddy fields of Kedah, long known as the rice bowl of Malaysia, green or gold depending on the season. It is one of the most open landscapes on the whole line, before the train heads on toward Penang and the hills of Perak.

How long does the Alor Setar to Kuala Lumpur train take?

The fastest train, the ES9209, takes 4h14m, and the slowest takes 4h59m. There are 6 trains a day: the first leaves Alor Setar at 07:59 and the last at 17:39.

Coming from Langkawi?

Arau, further north on the same line, is the closest station to the Kuala Perlis ferry jetty, about 20 to 30 minutes away by taxi. If you arrive from Langkawi on that ferry, Arau is usually the simpler place to board.

About the author

Maxence Decamp, founder of YesMyTrips, on a boat in Southeast Asia.

Maxence Decamp

French, based in Southeast Asia since 2017

I spent six years in transport booking across Southeast Asia before founding YesMyTrips in 2025. In those years I saw too many travellers arrive at the wrong station, miss their train, or pay two or three times the real fare because of contradictory information found online. The platform exists to make booking simple and reliable.

This editorial site exists for a different reason. Most English language guides to trains in the region are generic, copied from one blog to the next, and often wrong. Here I publish data checked against the official operator systems, and I write the guides from riding the routes myself, not from a search engine.

This blog combines YesMyTrips' regularly verified data and my own travel notes, route by route.
