The journey

The Taiping to Kuala Lumpur train, up close.

Taiping, where Malaysia's railway story began in 1885, has direct electric ETS trains south to Kuala Lumpur. The ride starts at the foot of the Bintang hills and runs down through Perak to the capital.

Into the Bukit Berapit Tunnel

Soon after leaving Taiping, the train runs under the Bintang range through the Bukit Berapit Tunnel, 3.3 km long and opened in 2013, one of the longest railway tunnels in Southeast Asia, before coming out on the Kuala Kangsar side.

How long does the Taiping to Kuala Lumpur train take?

The fastest train, the ES9109, takes 2h44m, and the slowest takes 3h22m. There are 13 trains a day: the first leaves Taiping at 06:11 and the last at 19:41.

What became of the first railway

The Taiping - Port Weld line was dismantled in the 1980s, and Port Weld is now called Kuala Sepetang. Taiping's current station opened in 2014 with the electrified double track, close to the town centre and the Lake Gardens.

About the author

Maxence Decamp, founder of YesMyTrips, on a boat in Southeast Asia.

Maxence Decamp

French, based in Southeast Asia since 2017

I spent six years in transport booking across Southeast Asia before founding YesMyTrips in 2025. In those years I saw too many travellers arrive at the wrong station, miss their train, or pay two or three times the real fare because of contradictory information found online. The platform exists to make booking simple and reliable.

This editorial site exists for a different reason. Most English language guides to trains in the region are generic, copied from one blog to the next, and often wrong. Here I publish data checked against the official operator systems, and I write the guides from riding the routes myself, not from a search engine.

This blog combines YesMyTrips' regularly verified data and my own travel notes, route by route.
