The journey

The Gua Musang to Wakaf Bharu train, up close.

This is the wildest part of the Jungle Railway, from the limestone town of Gua Musang down through the Kelantan interior to Wakaf Bharu, the station for Kota Bharu. It is served by the Shuttle Timur, a diesel unit that stops at every station, and by the long distance Ekspres Rakyat Timuran.

Through the Kelantan rainforest

The line follows the rivers of the Kelantan interior through forest and small villages. Dabong, a stop on the way, is the access point for Gunung Stong State Park and the Jelawang Waterfall. The section between Kuala Gris and Gua Musang was the last to open, in 1931, completing the line from Gemas to the coast. On 2 of 4 trains, the ride happens in daylight: SH52 (08:15), SH58 (14:40).

How long does the Gua Musang to Wakaf Bharu train take?

The fastest train, the SH58, takes 4h53m, and the slowest takes 6h03m. There are 4 trains a day: the first leaves Gua Musang at 05:18 and the last at 17:25.

Wakaf Bharu for Kota Bharu

There is no station in Kota Bharu itself. Wakaf Bharu, on the other side of the Kelantan River, is the stop used for the city, and Tumpat, a little further on, is the end of the line.

About the author

Maxence Decamp, founder of YesMyTrips, on a boat in Southeast Asia.

Maxence Decamp

French, based in Southeast Asia since 2017

I spent six years in transport booking across Southeast Asia before founding YesMyTrips in 2025. In those years I saw too many travellers arrive at the wrong station, miss their train, or pay two or three times the real fare because of contradictory information found online. The platform exists to make booking simple and reliable.

This editorial site exists for a different reason. Most English language guides to trains in the region are generic, copied from one blog to the next, and often wrong. Here I publish data checked against the official operator systems, and I write the guides from riding the routes myself, not from a search engine.

This blog combines YesMyTrips' regularly verified data and my own travel notes, route by route.
