The journey

The Gemas to Jerantut train, up close.

This is the southern part of the East Coast Line, the Jungle Railway, from the junction at Gemas north into Pahang. Jerantut is the railhead for Taman Negara, Malaysia's best-known rainforest park.

Slow train into the interior

The trains here are the Shuttle Timur, a diesel unit that stops at every station and halt, and the overnight Ekspres Rakyat Timuran. Fares are a few ringgit, and the line runs through oil palm country and forest on a single track opened in stages between 1910 and 1931. On 2 of 3 trains, the ride happens in daylight: SH34 (07:40), SH38 (15:30).

How long does the Gemas to Jerantut train take?

The fastest train, the ERT26, takes 3h10m, and the slowest takes 3h47m. There are 3 trains a day: the first leaves Gemas at 07:40 and the last at 22:55. 1 of them runs overnight.

From Jerantut to Taman Negara

Kuala Tahan, the park headquarters, is about 67 km from Jerantut, just over an hour by taxi or Grab. The alternative is a road transfer to Kuala Tembeling jetty and a three hour boat ride up the river, with boats usually leaving in the early afternoon.

About the author

Maxence Decamp, founder of YesMyTrips, on a boat in Southeast Asia.

Maxence Decamp

French, based in Southeast Asia since 2017

I spent six years in transport booking across Southeast Asia before founding YesMyTrips in 2025. In those years I saw too many travellers arrive at the wrong station, miss their train, or pay two or three times the real fare because of contradictory information found online. The platform exists to make booking simple and reliable.

This editorial site exists for a different reason. Most English language guides to trains in the region are generic, copied from one blog to the next, and often wrong. Here I publish data checked against the official operator systems, and I write the guides from riding the routes myself, not from a search engine.

This blog combines YesMyTrips' regularly verified data and my own travel notes, route by route.
