The journey

The Jerantut to Gemas train, up close.

From Jerantut, the railhead for Taman Negara, the East Coast Line runs south through Pahang to the junction at Gemas, where fast ETS trains continue to Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru.

Slow train out of the interior

The trains are the Shuttle Timur, a diesel unit that stops at every station and halt, and the long distance Ekspres Rakyat Timuran. Fares are a few ringgit, and the single track, opened in stages between 1910 and 1931, runs through forest and oil palm country down to Gemas. On 2 of 3 trains, the ride happens in daylight: SH35 (09:25), SH39 (16:55).

How long does the Jerantut to Gemas train take?

The fastest train, the SH35, takes 3h05m, and the slowest takes 3h10m. There are 3 trains a day: the first leaves Jerantut at 05:58 and the last at 16:55.

From Taman Negara to Jerantut

Kuala Tahan, the park headquarters, is about 67 km from Jerantut, just over an hour by taxi or Grab. You can also take the boat down the river to Kuala Tembeling jetty, then the road to Jerantut, a longer but far more scenic way out.

About the author

Maxence Decamp, founder of YesMyTrips, on a boat in Southeast Asia.

Maxence Decamp

French, based in Southeast Asia since 2017

I spent six years in transport booking across Southeast Asia before founding YesMyTrips in 2025. In those years I saw too many travellers arrive at the wrong station, miss their train, or pay two or three times the real fare because of contradictory information found online. The platform exists to make booking simple and reliable.

This editorial site exists for a different reason. Most English language guides to trains in the region are generic, copied from one blog to the next, and often wrong. Here I publish data checked against the official operator systems, and I write the guides from riding the routes myself, not from a search engine.

This blog combines YesMyTrips' regularly verified data and my own travel notes, route by route.
