The journey

The Gemas to Johor Bahru train, up close.

Since 12 December 2025, the electrified double track has reached Johor Bahru, about 192 km south of Gemas, and ETS trains run through to JB Sentral. It closed the last diesel gap on Malaysia's main west coast passenger route.

Two very different trains

Most departures are electric ETS trains, fast and air-conditioned. The other is the Ekspres Rakyat Timuran, the long distance train of the Jungle Railway, which shares this section with the ETS on its way to JB Sentral: slower, but with sleeper berths and the cheapest fares.

How long does the Gemas to Johor Bahru train take?

The fastest train, the EP9323, takes 1h50m, and the slowest takes 3h22m. There are 8 trains a day: the first leaves Gemas at 09:18 and the last at 22:20. 1 of them runs overnight.

JB Sentral and Singapore

JB Sentral sits next to the Causeway checkpoint, and KTM's Shuttle Tebrau runs from there across to Woodlands in Singapore. The RTS Link, a new cross-border line from Bukit Chagar next to JB Sentral, is expected to open in early 2027 and will replace the shuttle.

About the author

Maxence Decamp, founder of YesMyTrips, on a boat in Southeast Asia.

Maxence Decamp

French, based in Southeast Asia since 2017

I spent six years in transport booking across Southeast Asia before founding YesMyTrips in 2025. In those years I saw too many travellers arrive at the wrong station, miss their train, or pay two or three times the real fare because of contradictory information found online. The platform exists to make booking simple and reliable.

This editorial site exists for a different reason. Most English language guides to trains in the region are generic, copied from one blog to the next, and often wrong. Here I publish data checked against the official operator systems, and I write the guides from riding the routes myself, not from a search engine.

This blog combines YesMyTrips' regularly verified data and my own travel notes, route by route.
