The journey

The Tapah Road to Kuala Lumpur train, up close.

Tapah Road is the railway stop for travellers coming down from the Cameron Highlands. The hardest part is reaching the station: once you are on the train, the ride south to Kuala Lumpur is flat, fast and comfortable.

From the Cameron Highlands to the station

From Tanah Rata, buses take the old road down to Tapah, about 70 km and around 1 hour 40 minutes of bends. Tapah Road station is about 10 km from Tapah town, roughly 20 minutes by taxi, and taxis are not always waiting, so book one or a Grab ahead and leave a comfortable margin before your train.

How long does the Tapah Road to Kuala Lumpur train take?

Every train takes 1h58m. There are 4 trains a day: the first leaves Tapah Road at 05:36 and the last at 19:36.

Is the train the best option?

With the transfer and the bus, the train via Tapah Road takes about as long as a direct bus from Kuala Lumpur to Tanah Rata. The train wins on comfort and reliability for the first leg, the direct bus on simplicity.

About the author

Maxence Decamp, founder of YesMyTrips, on a boat in Southeast Asia.

Maxence Decamp

French, based in Southeast Asia since 2017

I spent six years in transport booking across Southeast Asia before founding YesMyTrips in 2025. In those years I saw too many travellers arrive at the wrong station, miss their train, or pay two or three times the real fare because of contradictory information found online. The platform exists to make booking simple and reliable.

This editorial site exists for a different reason. Most English language guides to trains in the region are generic, copied from one blog to the next, and often wrong. Here I publish data checked against the official operator systems, and I write the guides from riding the routes myself, not from a search engine.

This blog combines YesMyTrips' regularly verified data and my own travel notes, route by route.
